Transfer Credit for External Programs
To continue receiving financial while you study abroad at a site where IUPUI does not have an overseas study program, you must remain enrolled at IUPUI in a special course — either OVST Y496 or Y498 — during your absence.
Students planning to use financial aid for their program will enroll in OVST Y496. Students not using financial aid who wish to receive transfer credit will register for OVST 498. Tuition is not charged for either course, but there is an administrative fee.
Registration in Y496 allows you to remain in full-time status at IUPUI while studying abroad. It verifies that you are participating in an approved study abroad program. In addition, whether you need financial assistance or not, registration in Y496 allows for loan deferments for the term(s) you are overseas.
To qualify for this special course registration, your study abroad courses and credits must form an integral part of your degree program at IUPUI, meeting major, minor, or elective degree requirements as verified by your academic advisor. Also, the country in which you wish to study cannot be under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning.
To enroll, students must receive pre-approval from the IUPUI Study Abroad Office and their academic advisor.
Contact Stephanie Leslie at slleslie@iupui.edu for information on the pre-approval process.
