Open Letter on Safety and Security Abroad

The safety of students is our highest priority. OIA staff and campus faculty leaders take all reasonable precautions to maintain the safety of students on our programs abroad.

We monitor international events on a daily basis to be certain that we act in the best interests of our students abroad and to determine whether programs will run as scheduled http://www.iupui.edu/~abroad/safety/status.html

IU policy prohibits University support for programs in any location listed for a Travel Warning by the US Department of State, or for other circumstances that would cause reasonable concern for safety.

Read more here on what lies behind that State Department’s use of travel warnings.

To guide our decisions, we receive and evaluate information from many sources, including:

  • public announcements and advisories from the US Department of State, the Overseas Security Advisory Council, and other similar bodies;
  • regular reports from our partner institutions around the world;
  • reports from directors and staff of our own programs abroad; and
  • news sources.

We believe that safety is best achieved through the joint efforts of IUPUI and the student participants.  For this reason, we encourage you to make use of the resources http://www.iupui.edu/~oia/SA/links.html  provided here.

If it should become advisable or essential to close any programs, we would inform participants and, where appropriate, their designated contacts. Please contact us if you have any questions or need additional information.
