Financial Aid for Study Abroad
Most financial aid may be applied to IUPUI- and IU-sponsored programs.
Summer financial aid is usually in the form of loans, grants, or scholarships. For summer study abroad, you must register for at least 6 credits over both summer sessions which can be a combination of on and off campus coursework.
PLEASE NOTE: Financial aid is not disbursed until the beginning of the respective term. Be prepared to make certain program payments in advance. Contact your financial aid advisor early to determine your financial aid eligibility and make sure your aid information is accurate.
Regular financial aid eligibility criteria apply (e.g., loan maximum, minimum number of credit hours), but your loan application is based on the overseas program budget, which includes the airfare and the costs of living overseas.
Some financial aid will NOT apply for overseas programs. For example co-sponsored programs through IU (e.g., IES, CIEE) or external programs will not allow you to use fee courtesy, Indiana Higher Education awards, fee remissions, or assistance to children of disabled veterans.
You must submit a Credit Transfer Agreement for non-IU and non-IUPUI programs (i.e., programs which only award transfer credits) before you are eligible to receive financial aid. You must also enroll in an appropriate transfer credit course.
