The Thomas B. Artman Memorial Scholarship

The International Study Club, Inc. was organized in March 1924. Its founder was Mrs. Samuel R. Artman, lecturer, traveler, writer and poet. The organization tries to increase knowledge of other lands, their people and their religions. Mrs. Artman's son, Thomas B. Artman was a student at Wabash College at the time of his death. It was deemed appropriate to establish this scholarship in his name.
The International Study Club is awarding this scholarship for the 2006-2007 school year. It will be presented directly to the University in the name of the recipient.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria :
1. Be a full time student with sophomore or junior standing.
2. Student must have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Application Requirements:
To apply for this scholarship the student must submit the following:
1. A letter of application indicating academic and career goals.
2. Completed scholarship application.
3. Letter of recommendation from at least one professor or teacher.
4. Letter of recommendation from the Office of Financial Aid.
5. Letter of recommendation from the Office of Records & Registration along with an official transcript.
Selection Process:
The International Travel Study Committee will thoroughly screen and interview applicants based on the established selection criteria: An award will be presented at the Club’s May banquet.
The amount of this scholarship is approximately $600.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for Study Abroad

National Security Education Program (NSEP) http://www.borenawards.org/ Boren Scholarships are available to degree-seeking undergraduates planning to study abroad.

The Charlemagne Scholarship www.rwth-aachen.de

The Charlemagne scholarship is awarded annually to a U.S. engineering student. The amount of 9,000 Euro is awarded per academic year. Students can be given a placement in an industry orientated research unit, with the option to attend advanced courses. Free preparatory German language training will be given according to the needs of the applicant.
Deadline for the coming academic year starting in October: January 31.
Application for Scholarship:
There is no specific form in which the applications must be submitted. It is understood that the applicants inform us of their previous educational and professional career, their educational and professional perspective, their motivation, their linguistic and cultural skills and any other aspect which proves that they are an appropriate candidate for the Charlemagne Scholarship. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships www.iie.org/gilman:

Sponsored by the US. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, this program enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue semester or academic-year long study abroad opportunities in other countries. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

Freeman-Asia Grant:

With funds from the Freeman Foundation and sponsored by IIE http://www.iie.org/Freeman-ASIA, this grant is for undergraduate students studying in East and Southeast Asia (Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam). Students must demonstrate financial need, submit a final report and preference is given to students with no previous experience in the country in which they plan to study. Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Awards are as follows:

  • $ 3,000 for summer programs
  • $ 5,000 for semester programs
  • $ 7,000 for academic year programs

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

The Foreign Affairs Fellowships http://www.woodrow.org/fellowships/foreign_affairs/pickering_undergrad/application.php prepare talented college sophomores and seniors to become Foreign Service Officers in the United States Department of State after completion of undergraduate and graduate degrees. The programs attract outstanding students from all ethnic and social backgrounds. In particular, the program seeks to attract women and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need.
The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study with reimbursement for books and one round-trip travel. The Fellow must commit to pursuing a graduate degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools identified by the WWNFF. Participating graduate schools provide financial support in the second year of graduate study based on need. Fellows meet annually in Washington, DC for a program orientation.
Deadline:  February 8 for 2008.

DAAD Scholarship for study in Germany:

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) http://www.daad.org/?p=48968 is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. They offer programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers, and others in higher education, providing financial support to over 50,000 individuals per year. They also represent the German higher education system abroad, promote Germany as an academic and research destination, and help build ties between institutions around the world. Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, sendior thesis research, and/or internships in Germany that are either independently designed or part of organized programs.
Requirements
Sophomores and juniors in all academic fields are eligible to apply. All applicants should be able to receive academic credit at their home institutions for their activity in Germany. Applicants must submit a DAAD language evaluation form, although German language competency is not mandatory. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in Germany and explain how their time there will impact their academic or professional goals. Applicants must be younger than 32 at the start of the grant period.
Terms of Award
Scholarships may be granted for four to 10 months. Recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of approximately €615, and additional funds are provided to help defray travel, health insurance, and start-up costs.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships:

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships aim to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. These scholarships are for study in another country where there is a Rotary club. Recipients are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill through appearances before Rotary Clubs, schools, civic organizations, and other forums in the host country and are expected to share the experiences of understanding acquired during their period abroad with the people of their home countries. The availability of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships is determined by each Rotary district based on its contributions to the Rotary Foundation, and the number and types of scholarships offered vary from year to year.
Award Types:

  • Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year (usually 9 months) of study, specifically to cover round-trip transportation, tuition, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies, not to exceed $25,000 or its equivalent.
  • Multi-Year Ambassadorial scholarships are for two years of degree oriented study. A flat grant of $12,000 or its equivalent will be provided per year to be applied toward the costs of a degree program.
  • Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training expenses, and homestay living arrangements, not to exceed $12,000 and $19,000 respectively.
  • Grants for University Teachers provide a flat grant of $10,000 for 3-5 months of service or $20,000 for 6-10 months of service. Recipients are expected to teach in a low income country.

Eligibility for Academic-Year, Multi-Year, and Cultural Scholarships:

  • be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary Club
  • have completed at least two years of university coursework or equivalent professional experience prior to beginning scholarship studies
  • no age restrictions
  • spouses or descendants of Rotarians may not apply
  • scholarships cannot be used to study in an area of a country where the candidate has previously lived more than six months (the scholarships are not appropriate for foreign students seeking funding to continue studies at a given university)
  • scholarship may not be used in conjunction with a study abroad program based in another country
  • Different eligibility criteria applies for Grants for University Teachers. Please check the following website for details.

Scholarships for Those Studying in Japan

The Bridging Scholarship program www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html awards 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur will studying abroad in Japan for a semester or academic year. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded 610 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 28 students from colleges and universities across the United States received scholarships for the Spring 2006 semester.
Applications for Bridging Scholarships are accepted twice a year. The deadline for students studying in Fall 2008 is April 7, 2008.
Students must submit three copies of all materials except letters of recommendation and transcripts. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of May. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.
